New Minister, New Hope…

When Honourable Mustapha was announced as the next Minister for Youth and Sports I quickly called him to congratulate him and wish him the best.
It has always been my policy to do so and offer support…. it is after all about Ghana first and foremost!
The presence of our new Minister for Youth and Sports, Honourable Mustapha Hamed at our Rugby finals was both significant and appreciated. His presence allowed me to have a positive and frank discussion about the relationship between the Ministry and Minority Sports and of course Rugby in particular.
The lack of cooperation between the sports bodies and minority sports both for funding and use of public infrastructure as well as false claims by the Ministry with respect of the yearly funding of 100,000 for minority sports were discussed.
Most significant was the position of the Minister. He is clearly taking a different approach from his predecessor. He was also realistic about finances and asked for time to properly assess matters with the view to returning to work with the minority bodies!

“Dumsor” is Real!

As time passes rather than getting used to “Dumsor” I get more nervous. My nervousness arises from or for 4 different reasons:

1. Inability to plan because blackouts are unscheduled, unplanned and without warning

2. The rising cost of surviving means that managing recurrent expenses and taking care of daily affairs has become extremely difficult. The monies used for the generator mean less for other important things.

3. The wear and tear on the generator is perhaps amidst the rest of my fears, the biggest. The cost of replacing or repairing generators is massive and knowing that generators like any and all machines have a limit on usage and life

4. I provide “free” power for a few neighbours including the local pharmacy who desperately need power for care… Today was my nightmare day … the machine broke down …. business stopped and alternatives had to be sought! There was no comfort in learning that Adom, The Guide et al have all suffered similar or worse fates!

All I can say to those people who cannot see any correlation between “Dumsor” and productivity is clearly that they have never had to work or been truly productive before … maybe they have simply benefitted from society and individuals and therefore simply do not get it! “DUMSOR” is real

Kwabena Yeboah tags Herbert Mensah as Kotoko’s greatest leader ever

Herbert MensahVeteran sports journalist, Kwabena Yeboah has tagged former Asante Kotoko Board Chairman Herbert Mensah as the greatest leader he has ever met at the Porcupine Warriors.

After his appointment as Board Chairman of Kotoko by the late Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II in 1999, Herbert Mensah devised a 5-year strategic plan that was aimed at rebuilding the club to ensure excellence both on and off the pitch.

During Mr. Mensah’s tenure, Kotoko was able to generate a 234 million old cedi Mobitel Ghana sponsorship deal to settle unpaid player salaries and hand each of the 18 players a Star Call cellular phone and starter pack before introducing Kotoko Express, the club’s official mouth-piece, onto the news-stands.

The era of the Mr. Mensah also saw Asante Kotoko being handled by top coaches like Ernest Middendorp, who contributed to the club’s rise to become the second best team on the African continent behind Al Ahly of Egypt.

“There have been several great leaders of Asante Kotoko the likes of Ernest Yaw Ofori Barwuah, Paa Nuako but Herbert Mensah is the greatest I have met in Asante Kotoko,” Mr. Yeboah told Starr FM.

Asides his plans to commercialize Kotoko’s games, training sessions and programs through radio and television stations, Herbert Mensah was ready to oversee the construction of a 75,000 seater sports complex for the club on a 50-acre land given out by the team’s life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

But, the plans of the Economist at the latter stages of his era could not materialize after his tenure came to an end in 2003. And, Kwabena Yeboah is disappointed that Herbert Mensah was never given another opportunity to run and improve the club.

“My biggest regret is that he was not allowed to actualize his vision for Asante Kotoko,” Mr. Yeboah added.

Herbert Mensah was replaced by Major Rtd. Yaw Larsen at Asante Kotoko.
