A cross section of Ghanaians has called on the Government of Ghana to declare the memorial of the May 9th, 2001 Accra Stadium Disaster a national day of observance.
Mr Herbert Mensah, Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the time of the second biggest recorded stadium disaster on 9 May 2001 at the Accra Sports Stadium, has called on all Ghanaians to “Embrace The Day” not only in solidarity with the 126 fallen heroes who died on that day but in a call for responsibility, discipline and respect in all matters related to sports.

Address at the occasion of the 16th “May 9th Remembered” at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on 6 May 2017, the day that coincided with the birthday celebration of the Asantehene.
Mr Herbert Mensah, Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the time of the second biggest recorded stadium disasters, is true to nature remembering the tragedy of 9 May 2001 for the 16th consecutive year in 2017 with a series of events in Kumasi.
