There are few words which can describe my love and respect for my Grandmother other than to say she represented everything that i considered special and good in life. I am at peace because i was with her when she passed away and she did so peacefully and without pain. I do not remember a day when she was ill and she brought me only happiness. Most importantly she never judged me and always supported me.

Herbert Mensah recently accompanied the former President of Ghana, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings (Ret.), on a visit to South Africa where Rawlings received the highest accolade for 2013 of the Mkiva Humanitarian Award entitled “Global Champion for People’s Freedom .”
They also visited the Steve Biko Memorial in Ginsberg, outside King Williams’ Town. The Memorial is dedicated to the political activist, murdered in 1977 by security police. who became the face of Black Consciousness in South Africa. His legacy is maintained by the Steve Biko Foundation.
As part of the trip a courtesy visit was also made to Mr. Thabo Mbeki, former President of the Republic of South Africa.
Despite leaving the scene, Herbert Mensah love for Asante Kotoko has not dwindled and his instrumentality has resulted in a lucrative sponsorship deal for the club he led for a number of years.
In Italy apparently when it is pay back time a dead fish is put outside your door (in Ghana someone may pick it and go prepare breakfast with it … unless they understand what the full implications of a dead fish on a doorstep are)
In other parts of the World (where there is mistrust for institutions) evil and wrong-doing are met with the same and more.
“A life for an eye” philosophy ensures that people are careful before they mess with the lives of others.
There are evil elements amongst us constantly dabbling in darkness to the detriment of individuals and society at large.
They are only lucky that most people are of faith otherwise they would resort to the old testament and rid society of them!
In a rare appearance i attended the funeral of the late and respected Nana Apagyahene in Ashtown in Kumasi.
Nana was a gentleman who made a big impression on me when i first joined Kotoko. He gave me early warnings on the challenges that lay ahead and asked whether i had “thick skin”! He was always strong and yet gracious and quick to lend a smile, tease a bit and give needed support and advise!
Napo his Son became a good friend years later and supported me in my May 9th stadium anniversary celebrations.
I am deeply saddened and pray for his soul and that the Lord strengthens
There were times over the last few days when i wondered about our future.
I knew that some of our institutions were “suspect” to say the least and with raised tensions, massive and at times polarised security, unnecessary press conferences, citizenry armed, misleading result information and evidence of mistakenly or intentionally wrong election data.
The emergence of untruths and dodgy rumours meant that as the media failed us, the EC site mysteriously crashed and various live feeds were not the real deal. We were, seemingly on a course of possible violence and anarchy.
The fact that we didn’t owes more to the natural self restraint of the Ghanaian citizens than to the various institutions established to legitimise both the process and peace!
Given the sad ethnocentric theme which kept rearing it’s head throughout this election (more so than others) we need to be lauded for the present peace.
What i find extremely fascinating, given many factors, was the restraint shown by the apparent loser Nana Akuffo Addo. Given the information which was quickly emerging about numbers fraud in some areas. It would have been easier for a determined and ambitious politician like Nana Akuffo Addo to decide to make allegations of fraud, cheating and conspiracies publicly prior to the EC’s announcement last night confirming John Dramani Mahama as victor but he didn’t.
The fact that he didn’t and chose to seek redress through other means is what makes this process workable in our context.
The future is still uncertain but what is important is that peace is maintained even in the context of any allegation.
Ghana after all must always come first!
One of my greatest points of past and current sadness is the lack of opportunity and hope for many teenagers and young people… i constantly get asked to help out with jobs to the point of some desperation…
Surely the time has come for a national approach and consensus on this most real of problems. It is time not for what was done yesterday to be repeated but for a new kind of thinking and vision which would elevate Ghana to the point where our real growth was matched by real jobs and opportunities!
Friends, please pace yourselves these next three to four months. We’re in beginning of the midst of the toughest time of the year. Lots of tension, misinformation, misunderstanding etc.
It is a time when we must fall on our faith and be guided by the light!
It may be of help if we find a way to release the steam that doesn’t involve assaulting those we love!
It’s easy to destroy now. But if you work at understanding what’s driving you, and recognize when you’re getting burnt and look underneath for the cause, there will be a lot of healing of issues that have trailed you for some time.
We all seek and need peace but we have to recognise that talk alone is never enough. We must start by looking into that mirror!
